Last week, 70 people removed garbage, debris and mud from the streets and sidewalks in Coney Island, Brooklyn. They had been sentenced to community service after pleading guilty to infractions like public drunkenness, open container violations or speeding More than 1,000 bags of trash and debris were removed. The people were shuttled from court to the neighborhood in vans provided by the Center for Court Innovation, a nonprofit that works on alternative justice programs. The Manhattan District Attorney's office says more projects could be in the works to help with cleanup efforts.
