Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi spoke out against the deadly clashes plaguing his country Thursday, but refused to rescind a disputed constitution drafted by his allies or his decrees giving him near absolute powers. Morsi also vowed that Egypt would not return to the oppressive dictatorships of its past, defending the decrees at the heart of the protests. He said it was lawful for him to self-appoint near-absolute powers, setting him above judicial oversight, and pointed the finger at protesters for attacking his "legitimate" government. "While we express the right to freedom of expression, I cannot tolerate that any person perpetrate the killing of any person. I cannot tolerate any act of killing or vandalism," he said. Morsi invited the opposition to a "comprehensive and productive" dialogue starting Saturday at his presidential palace, but offered no sign at all that he might offer them any meaningful concessions.

Key:

  • Aggregate Sentiment is meant to be an indicator of an individual's overall sentiment.
  • The Mean is meant to be an indicator of an individual's average comment sentiment.
  • The Standard Deviation, when there are enough quotes, will indicate an individual's consistency of sentiment (i.e. a Standard Deviation of 0 would mean they were very consistent in their sentiment and 1 would mean they were very inconsistent).

Note that quote stats are likely to be meaningless beyond the aggregate score due to the tiny sample size. However, they are always provided just in case you find something useful there.
