Egyptians voted on Saturday in the second and final phase of a referendum on an Islamist-backed constitution that has polarized the nation, with little indication that the expected passage of the charter will end the political crisis in which the country is mired. Islamist President Mohammed Morsi is likely to emerge from a bruising month-long battle with a narrow victory for the constitution he and his Islamist allies sought. But it has been at the cost of alienating many who had backed him, leaving an administration he has long tried to depict as broad-based even more reliant on the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists. The liberal and secular opposition, in turn, has ridden a wave of anger among a significant part of the population against Morsi and the Brotherhood, who many feel are establishing a lock on power.
