The latest unemployment information mirrors the effect of the region 's recession, and Spain's government cuts aimed at restoring security to the nation 's funds. The national statistics office stated unemployment in the July to September period rose 0. 4 %, compared to the previous quarter; and 3. 5 % compared to the year prior, as another 85,000 people were left without work. A sharp fall in the number of public sector employees accounted for a big section of the unemployment rate increase. Almost 50,000 less employees were used in the public sector in the 3rd quarter, representing a fall of 7 % year-over-year. Some 1. 7 million Spanish homes have no grownup of working age in employment, a surge of even more than 300,000 over the past year. That means around 10 % of all Spanish homes are now without a breadwinner.
