President Barack Obama has been urged to deal with Cambodia's longstanding human rights concerns during a see this month to the Southeast Asian country, the first by a U.S. president, a human rights team said on Tuesday. New York-based Human Rights Watch said in a report that more than 300 individuals have been eliminated in politically enthusiastic attacks in the previous twenty years during the regulation of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen. The report suggested senior Cambodian government officials and protection forces were involved in a collection of significant rights abuses because Cambodia signed peace arrangements in 1991 to pave the way for democracy. It said officials presumably liable for extrajudicial killings and other abuses against opposition political leaders, protection forces, activists and journalists have not been put on trial, however instead were rewarded.

Puerto Ricans voted in nonbinding referendum on status as U.S. commonwealth A majority rejected the current status and favored statehood as an alternative It is the first time a majority of voters choose statehood But analysts find problems drawing conclusions from the vote (CNN) -- In an overshadowed Election Day contest, Puerto Ricans voted in favor of statehood in a nonbinding referendum, marking the first time such an initiative garnered a majority. Puerto Ricans were asked about their desires in two parts. First, by a 54% to 46% margin, voters rejected their current status as a U.S. commonwealth. In a separate question, 61% chose statehood as the alternative, compared with 33% for the semi-autonomous "sovereign free association" and 6% for outright independence.

More school help for pregnant teens may curb welfare dependence | Reduction

More school help for pregnant teens may curb welfare dependence

Excerpt:

In this Monday, Sept. 10, 2012 photo, Kali Gonzalez, a student at St. John's State College studies while holding her daughter Kiah, 2, at their home in St. Augustine, Fla. A new report by the National Women's Law Center says offering pregnant teens extra support would ultimately save taxpayers money by helping them become financially independent and not dependent on welfare.  / AP MIAMI When 15-year-old Kali Gonzalez became pregnant, the honors student considered transferring to an alternative school. She worried teachers would harass her for missing class because of doctor's appointments and morning sickness. A guidance counselor urged Gonzalez not to, saying that could lower her standards. Instead, her counselor set up a meeting with teachers at her St. Augustine high school to confirm she could make up missed assignments, eat in class and use the restroom whenever she needed.
